Quick answer Taj Restaurant and Banquet, 247 S Bolingbrook Dr, Bolingbrook, IL, runs three weekly specials: unlimited pani puri for $9.99 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 4–9 pm (dine-in); a Hyderabadi Friday thali for $16.99, Fridays 12–3 pm; and halwa puri with choley for $9.99 on Sundays, 11 am–3 pm, dine-in or to go. All of it is Hand Zabiha Halal.
What is pani puri (golgappa)?
Pani puri is a street snack: small, hollow, crisp puris that you crack open with your thumb, fill, dunk in spiced water (the pani) and eat in one bite before they go soft. Depending on where your family is from, you may call it golgappa or puchka — it is the same joy.
Ours are filled with spiced potato and chickpeas, and the pani is tangy and ice-cold, made with mint and tamarind. The crunch, the cold, the sour and the heat all land at once, which is why it is very hard to stop at one.
When is unlimited pani puri at Taj, and how much is it?
Every Wednesday and Thursday from 4 pm to 9 pm, unlimited pani puri is $9.99 a person, dine-in. As many as you can eat, for one price. It is a good midweek plan with friends — bring a group and see who stops first — and an easy after-school or after-work stop for families from Bolingbrook, Romeoville and Woodridge.
Outside those hours, pani puri (ten pieces) is on the regular menu, alongside dahi puri, papdi chaat, samosa chaat and chana chaat.
What is in the Friday Special thali?
Every Friday from 12 pm to 3 pm, the Friday Special is a Hyderabadi thali for $16.99 — timed for lunch after Jummah. On the plate:
- Bagara khana — fragrant Hyderabadi rice cooked with whole spices, the rice that sits next to biryani at every celebration.
- Dalcha — the lentil curry that traditionally goes with bagara khana.
- Chicken 65 — crisp, fiery, with curry leaves and dried chilli.
- Fried fish.
- Gulab jamun to finish.
It is a full Hyderabadi lunch on one plate, and the closest thing to a home dawat you can get on a weekday.
When can I get halwa puri on Sunday near Bolingbrook?
Every Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, halwa puri and choley is $9.99, dine-in or to go. Puris are fried fresh until they puff, served with spiced chickpea choley and sweet suji halwa — the desi Sunday breakfast, without the frying at home. Bring the whole family, or take it home hot to Naperville or Plainfield. It pairs well with a cup of Irani chai, our rich, creamy Hyderabadi-style tea.
Are the specials halal, and can I order them for a group?
Yes, everything at Taj is certified Hand Zabiha Halal and monitored by Halal Monitoring Services (HMS). For a group, call us at (630) 808-1832 or order trays on the catering page — bagara (baghara) rice, gulab jamun, halwa, mutton dalcha and 65 chicken all come by the half tray (serves 8–10) or full tray (serves 18–20).
We are open Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 11 am–10 pm; Friday and Saturday 11 am–11:30 pm; closed Monday.
