What is an aqeeqah?
An aqeeqah is a Muslim celebration of thanks for the birth of a child. Many families hold it on or around the seventh day after the birth, though plenty hold it later, when relatives can travel. Customs vary from family to family; what nearly every aqeeqah shares is a meal for family, friends and neighbours, and that is the part we help with. Your imam or family elders are the best guide to the religious side.
Should we hold the aqeeqah at the hall or at home?
Both work well; it mostly comes down to the guest list and how much you want to do yourselves with a new baby in the house.
- In the Taj hall: up to 100 seated guests, tables and chairs set to your floor plan, in-house sound for a short talk or dua, and food straight from our kitchen so it arrives hot. Smaller groups may be offered a reserved section of the restaurant instead. Linens, china and service staff can be added.
- At home: order catering trays and we deliver within 50 miles of Bolingbrook — Naperville, Plainfield, Romeoville, Woodridge, Lemont and beyond. Choose drop-off, or buffet service with attendants and chafing dishes, with setup and cleanup if you want it.
What food is served at an aqeeqah?
Mutton is traditional at many aqeeqahs, so most menus build around it:
- Rice: mutton biryani or chicken biryani, or baghara rice alongside a curry.
- Mutton: mutton korma, dum ka gosht, talawa gosht, marag or mutton dalcha.
- Chicken: butter chicken, chicken korma or dum ka chicken for the children and the less spice-minded.
- Vegetables: mirchi ka salan, baghare baingan or khatti dal.
- Sweet: Taj shahi kheer, shahi tukda or gulab jamun — something sweet for a sweet occasion.
If you would rather not pick dish by dish, our per-person dawat packages (from $18.99, 10-guest minimum, ordered by phone) cover curries, biryani, a vegetable, naan and dessert in one price. Mutton curry or mutton biryani adds $2 per person.
How many catering trays do I need for an aqeeqah?
Count your guests, then divide: a half tray serves 8–10 and a full tray serves 18–20. Plan your main rice dish to cover everyone, then add curries and sides — with more dishes on the table, each one goes further.
A worked example for 40 guests at home:
- 2 full trays of Chicken Biryani — $240
- 1 full tray of Mutton Korma — $180
- 1 half tray of Khatti Dal — $35
- 1 full tray of Taj Shahi Kheer — $140
That is $595 for the trays. Swap in Mutton Biryani ($100 half / $180 full) if you want mutton in the rice too. You can build the order and see the totals on the catering page, and pay 50% now and 50% at pickup, or in full.
How far ahead do I need to order?
For up to 25 guests, order at least 6 hours ahead; for more than 25, order a day ahead. Booking the hall needs more notice — you can reserve up to a year ahead, and popular Saturdays go early, so call as soon as you have a date in mind.
