What should I serve for iftar?

Most iftar tables run in two parts: something light to open the fast, then a proper meal after Maghrib. Here is how our menu fits that:

  • To open the fast — aaloo samosas (crisp pastry, spiced potato and pea), chicken or beef samosas, mix veg or chicken pakora, and chaat: samosa chaat, papdi chaat, chana chaat or dahi puri.
  • The main meal — chicken or mutton biryani, mutton haleem, a curry such as butter chicken or dum ka gosht, and khatti dal or daal tadka.
  • Something sweet — Taj shahi kheer, gulab jamun or shahi tukda by the tray.
  • To drink — sweet or salted lassi, or Irani chai, our rich, creamy Hyderabadi-style tea.

Can I order haleem by the tray for iftar?

Yes. Mutton haleem is on our catering menu at $110 for a half tray and $200 for a full tray. In Hyderabad, haleem is the dish of Ramadan: wheat, lentils and mutton pounded to silk over hours, then topped with fried onion, mint and lemon. Order it alongside a tray of biryani — chicken biryani is $75 a half tray and $120 a full tray, mutton biryani $100 and $180 — and you have the centre of the table covered.

How much food do I need for an iftar for 30 or 50 people?

Plan on roughly one full tray of savoury food for every 8 guests, because each person takes a little of two or three dishes. For about 50 people that is six to seven full trays — for example two of biryani, one of haleem, one curry, one dal and one of rice — plus starters and dessert. For 30, three to four full trays' worth, mixing half trays for variety. Our tray quote shows how many guests your order feeds as you build it.

Can you cater an iftar at the masjid?

Yes. Many community iftars are drop-off: we bring the trays and your volunteers serve. If you would rather not manage the food line, we can send buffet service with attendants and chafing dishes, and include setup and cleanup. We deliver within 50 miles of Bolingbrook — Naperville, Plainfield, Joliet, Aurora, Romeoville and the towns around them. Tray prices cover the food; staffing, rentals and delivery are extra.

How far ahead should I order iftar catering?

For up to 25 guests, at least 6 hours ahead; for more than 25, a day ahead. When you order on the catering page you choose the date and the time you want the food ready, so set it for a little before sunset to give yourself time to lay the table. Pay by card — 50% now and 50% at pickup, or in full.

For samosas, pakoras and chaat in quantity, or for anything not on the tray list, call us at (630) 808-1832 and tell us what you need. For a smaller household iftar, you can also order from the menu for pickup; most orders are ready in about 30 minutes.

Is everything halal?

Yes. Every piece of meat at Taj is certified Hand Zabiha Halal, monitored by Halal Monitoring Services (HMS), a division of the Shariah Board of America — in the restaurant and in every catering tray.
