What is Irani chai?

Irani chai is a rich, creamy milk tea, the signature tea of Hyderabad. It came to the city with its Irani cafés, where it is still drunk all day, and it is thicker, sweeter and more indulgent than everyday chai. Ours is made Hyderabadi style and listed on the menu as Irani Chai (Special Tea).

Drink it at the end of a meal, especially after biryani, haleem or nihari, or come in for a cup on its own in the afternoon. It pairs well with any of the desserts below.

What is the difference between Irani chai and regular chai?

Irani chai is richer and creamier; our regular chai is a lighter, everyday doodh-patti tea. Both are on the menu:

  • Irani Chai (Special Tea) — rich, creamy Hyderabadi-style tea. The treat.
  • Tea, small or large — proper doodh-patti chai, brewed in milk. The everyday cup.

Do you have lassi, and is it sweet or salted?

Both. Our lassi is thick yoghurt lassi, made sweet or salted, whichever you prefer. Sweet lassi goes well with dessert or cools you down after a spicy dish such as Chicken 65 or banjara boti. Salted lassi is the traditional choice with rich dishes like nihari and biryani. Other cold drinks include Pakola, the green ice cream soda from Karachi, and the usual cans.

What desserts can I order at Taj?

Our tres leches range is the place to start. Each is a sponge soaked in milk, in four versions:

  • Classic Tres Leches — sponge soaked in three milks, topped with cream.
  • Biscoff Tres Leches — the three-milk cake with a Biscoff crumb and drizzle.
  • Ras Malai Tres Leches — cardamom and saffron milk with pistachio on top; ras malai meets tres leches.
  • Chocolate Tres Leches — chocolate sponge soaked in three milks, with cream and shaved chocolate.

For something small, the Mango Cheesecake Cup and Oreo Cheesecake Cup are cheesecake cream layered with mango or Oreo crumb. There are also brownies, a red velvet dot cake, black forest cake, a mango cupcake and muffins.

Can I get shahi tukda, kheer or gulab jamun?

Yes, for parties. Shahi tukda, kheer and gulab jamun are made for our catering and dawat menus rather than the everyday dessert menu. By the tray (a half tray serves 8–10, a full tray 18–20):

  • Taj Shahi Kheer — $75 half / $140 full
  • Taj Shahi Tukda — $75 / $140
  • Gulab Jamun — $85 / $150
  • Apricot Delight, Halwa and Fruit Custard are on the tray menu too.

Order and pay for trays on the catering page, 50% now and 50% at pickup or in full. Our dawat packages (from $18.99 per person, 10-guest minimum; call to order) include a dessert chosen from shahi kheer, shahi tukda, gulab jamun and suji halwa, with gajar halwa, beetroot halwa and rabdi added from the Deluxe package up.
